Scunthorpe Sports Academy

About The Project:

The academy has become a centre of excellence for sports and recreation and is a hub for the development and delivery of sporting education and leadership training. The unique design for the facility has seen the creation of ‘pods’ covered in natural materials. It is thought to be the first time in the country that this type of construction has been used for a major leisure facility. The informal name of the Project 'The Pods' refers to a cluster of five shallow domes that make up its single roof and flow into each other like bubbles.

Facilities within the complex include:

• Eight lane, 25 metre swimming pool
• Teaching Pool
• Six court sports hall
• 85+ station gym over two levels with life fitness gym equipment
• Two fitness studios offering 50+ classes per week
• Sauna, steam room and spa
• Crèche
• Open mezzanine level where a café offers grandstand views of the pool.
• Meeting Rooms

Along with the mechanical and electrical works listed below Derry Building Services also installed a STU 350 Wood Pellet Biomass Boiler (376kW). This robust combustion system is well proven and has inherently low emissions and a high combustion efficiency.
